Mascot Name: WILDCATS
School Colors: Purple & White
History: The nickname “Wildcats” was initiated in a 1924 article written for the Chicago Tribune by Wallace Abbey following the memorable Northwestern-Chicago game. In that article Abbey referred to the NU football team as a “wall of Purple wildcats.” From that day on the Northwestern athletic teams have borne the nickname of “Wildcats.”
Nine years later, in 1933, the Northwestern athletic department teamed up with an advertising firm to create the first caricature of Willie. In 1947, the first mascot was actually brought to life when four members of the Alpha Delta fraternity dressed up as Willie for their Homecoming Float.
The color purple (with white) was selected by a special committee in 1894 as the official school color, not only for the athletic teams, but for the entire university.
